Little Fluffy Clouds

June 27, 2009

Earlier this evening it was brought to my attention that there were some curious clouds over Manhattan. I grabbed my camera and stepped out into the steamy streets of the East Village to see people everywhere peering up at the sky, which bore a striking resemblance to a lava lamp. Here’s what we saw:

Here are the same images in black and white.

Thanks to Sara for calling and drawing my attention to these these curious cloud formations.

A little further digging around, sparked by a tip from a helpful reader, has informed me that these are Mammatus clouds and they appear in warm, turbulent weather. Thank You Magic Lamp.
